Gas-assisted injection moulding is a moulding process where an inert gas is injected into the melted plastic pushing it further into the mould and resulting in hollow parts.In gas-assisted moulding, the plastic material is injected into the mould cavities like the regular injection moulding process but only up to 70%~80% of the mould volume. The melted plastic in contact with the mould walls begins to solidify, then nitrogen gas is injected into the mould through strategically designed and placed gas inlets, providing pressure that pushes the plastic into the mould extremities.

Compare with traditionally injection moulding, gas-assisted injection moulding has more benefits, such as thicker parts,lower clamp force, lighter weight products,no sink marks etc..Moulded parts also cool faster in this process and there is also less shrinkage as the thicker wall sections are hollow.Therefore, gas-assisted mould is widely used in automotive, home appliance, electronic and medical industry.

Although gas-assisted injection moulding has many benefits, the mould are not as easy to make as ordinary mould. It is a complex and high-precision mould that needs to control the supply and discharge of compressed gas to shape the plastic materials into desired products through injection.
