Overmoulding is an unique injection moulding process that seamlessly combines multiple materials into a single part or product. It can reduce the number of manufacturing steps needed and save production costs. The plastic combination forms include hard plastic combined with hard plastic and soft plastic combined with hard plastic. Hard plastic combined with hard plastic is usually for products with special requirements or functions, such as partial transparency for convenient observation. Soft plastic combined with hard plastic is commonly used for decoration or in places for functional requirements, such as anti-slip and indicator functions.

There are two methods to make over-moulding molds: one is to mould on a double-colored injection machine, the product will comes out as a finished product without being moulded into other moulds.( It's usually called two-color mould); another method is to produce the product on an ordinary injection machine. The desired moulded product will finally comes out after two or three more combinations of injection moulding.(It's usually called over mould.)

The two-color moulds also have two types: holistic and split. The holistic two-color mould has only one set of mould divided into hard and soft part. The split two-color mould consists of two sets of moulds, which moving moulds being the same and the fixed moulds divided into hard and soft one. The split two-color moulds can be processed separately and simultaneously. It is slightly faster than the holistic mould in terms of processing time. But from the perspective of the mould installation on the injection machine, the holistic type is more convenient than the split one.

For over mould, the processing is to produce one part, then place it into another mould for injection moulding. Due to the factors like product structure, mould price, machine cost, and other influencing factors, over mould is widely used in the plastic industry. However, you want to place the moulded part to the designated position accurately is not easy.The poduct will be easily crushed during mould closure or damaged during transportation. Therefore, its yield and production efficiency will be relatively low.
